Hit Video Game and TV Characters Star in All-New Graphic Novels

Papercutz, the leading children’s graphic novel publisher, has announced a partnership with Ubisoft, one of the world’s top producers of interactive entertainment to publish a series of graphic novels featuring their popular Rabbids characters. The Rabbids, stars of the hit RABBIDS INVASION TV series on Nickelodeon and multiple million-copy selling video games, will make their graphic novel debut in October 2014.

Originally appearing in the popular RAYMAN franchise, the Rabbids have become a genuine trans-media phenomenon. To date, RABBIDS video games have sold over 14 million copies worldwide, their videos have received over 77 million views on YouTube, and their Facebook page has almost 1.5 million likes. In 2013, the RABBIDS came to television, quickly becoming the #1 show in their timeslot and the #4 animated show on Nickelodeon. With a second season on the way from Nickelodeon, a major line of RABBIDS toys from McFarlane Toys launching earlier this year, and a trade publishing line debuting this fall from Simon & Schuster, the RABBIDS were perfectly positioned to make the jump to graphic novels.

“The RABBIDS are bawdy and irreverent,” explained Papercutz Editor-In-Chief Jim Salicrup. “But they’re not malicious. I think it’s that signature mix of unpredictable silliness and disregard for the rules that makes them appealing to kids and adults alike. That sense of no restrictions on their antics makes them perfectly suited for comics. With our ‘unlimited budgets’ we can place the Rabbids in any type of environment or situation we like, providing the perfect vehicle for fully exploiting the humorous potential of the Rabbids’ adventures.”

That philosophy of “no rules” has extended to the series content and even its marketing. While volume 1 of the series will feature numerous short gags and stories, volume 2 will feature a longer narrative and plans for volume 3 call for a series of shorter stories with a unifying theme. The versatile nature of the Rabbids themselves easily lends itself to each type of storytelling and has also inspired Papercutz to create promotional items that reflect the ever-changing nature of the Rabbids.

“We’ll be ‘soft launching’ the RABBIDS series at Comic-Con International,” explained Papercutz VP of Marketing Sven Larsen. “Originally, we were going to hand out RABBIDS stickers and encourage people to help us ‘guerilla market’ the books around the city. But we were frustrated that the RABBIDS would be restricted to a few physical locations. So we decided to create large magnets instead. This way kids and adults can place the RABBIDS just about anywhere. And their unsuspecting friends and families will never know when they’re going to show up!”

Papercutz will be handing out this special RABBIDS promotional item at their Comic-Con booth (#2546). RABBIDS series writer Eric Esquivel will also be on hand Friday and Saturday to sign this special keepsake.

“RABBIDS reflects our continuing commitment to publishing a diverse range of material in graphic novel format,” noted Papercutz publisher Terry Nantier. “We’ve always referred to ourselves an as ‘all-ages’ publisher and it’s hard to think of a better example of that type of material than RABBIDS. All my favorite graphic novels have that same kind of appeal and it’s one of the main reasons we’re all excited to add RABBIDS to our mix of titles. I just wish I could get our editorial team to remember how many ‘a’s there are in ‘Bwaaaaaaaaaah!’”

Fans will get a chance to see if Papercutz’s editors manage to get it right when RABBIDS #1: “Bwaaaaaaaaaah!” (ISBN 978-1-62991-048-2, Diamond Product Code AUG141608) is published on October 1, 2014.
